Thank you for coming to read to us this week.

We have a play to perform to you. It's the story of

Rona and the Moon.

Transition- First row girls turn right and first row boys turn left and exchange positions. Second row girls and boys do the same.

Whaea Mali will play some music during the transition) start at 0.12

Cast of Characters: 

  • Narrator(s): 2

  • Rona: A hardworking but quick-tempered woman. (1)

  • Rona’s Father: A wise elder. (1)

  • The Moon (Marama): Proud, bright, and easily offended. (1)

  • The Ngaio Tree: Strong and helpful (1).

  • Rona’s whānau: All the boys

  • The Forest (Chorus): All the girls

The SCENE: The Ngahere (girls) stand at the back, swaying gently.

Rona’s whānau(boys + Rona`s dad are lying down, sleeping.

Rona’s Father sits by an empty campfire.

Narrator 1 :  Long ago, in Aotearoa, a woman named Rona lived with her whānau. 

(Rona and her whānau wave out to the audience)

Narrator 2: Rona was a very hard worker, but she had a very short temper!

Rona’s Father: (Yawning) Rona, my daughter. The fire is dying, and the children are thirsty. Please go to the stream and fetch some cool water.

Rona: Yes, father I will go right now.

Rona’s whānau: (sitting up) Thank you, Rona! We are so thirsty! (Then lie back down).

Narrator 1 : The night was very dark. The clouds covered the sky

Narrator 2. Rona picked up her water gourds and started walking into the ngahere.

Forest Chorus:Shhh, Shhh,,,,,,,,Swish, swish... hoot, hoot!

Rona: Ooh, it is very dark.  Marama, where are you? Please shine your light!

The Moon: Here I am! I will light your path, Rona.

Rona: Oh, thank you, Marama. Now I can see the trail.

Narrator 1: But just as Rona reached the riverbank, a big, dark cloud slid across the moon.

The Moon: (Marama lifts up a cardboard cloud) Oh no! I’m blocked!

Narrator 2 : Suddenly, everything went pitch black. Rona couldn't see a thing.

Rona: (Taking a big step) Ouch!

Narrator 1 :Rona tripped over a  "root".Her water gourd fell to the ground.

Rona:  Ow! My toe! You stupid Moon! You left me in the dark!

The Ngahere Chorus: (Gasping loudly)  What did she just say!

The Moon: What did you call me? Stupid?  Nobody talks to the Moon like that!

Narrator 2 : Marama the Moon became so angry that he reached right down from the sky to grab Rona.

Rona: Uh oh! Help! Pāpā! whānau! The Moon is trying to take me!

Narrator 1: Rona’s Father and Family woke up and started yelling at marama. They broke out into a fierce haka

Tama: E te rangatahi

Ngā tamariki hi, ngā tamariki hi

Aki akina hi, Hikitia hi!

Ngā tamariki hi, ngā tamariki hi 

Aki akina hi, Hikitia hi!

Rona’s Father & Family: Run, Rona, run!

Narrator 2: Rona tried to run, but the Moon’s pull was too strong. She was being pulled up, up, up into the sky!

Rona: Help me, Ngaio tree! Don't let me go!

The Ngaio Tree: I’ve got you, Rona! Hold on to my branches!

Narrator 1: The Moon pulled Rona,  the tree pulled Rona. It was a game of tug-of-war. 1,2,3,4

Forest Chorus: Pull! Pull! Pull!

Narrator 1 :  But the Moon was just too strong. Up went Rona. Up went the Ngaio Tree.

Narrator 2:  And that is where Rona stayed. The Forest, Rona’s whānau and Rona’s Father looked up into the sky and sang.

Narrators say together : So, remember this story whenever you look up at a full moon.

Mīharo kē ana - Astound me Ki tōna pakari kia ora - with your maturity by Tē memeha, te wairua - Don't weaken, the spirit you show ki te kōrero Māori - when speaking Maori. Kia kaha tātou - Let us be strong Ki te (Hi ) kōrero Māori! - in speaking Maori!
